Albion Online, an MMO like RuneScape

15 Games Like Runescape

阅读时间: 14 分钟

If you’re here, you know RuneScape. From the classic game to Old School and RuneScape 3, this game is one of the most iconic MMORPG’s on the market, and like many, I’ve sunk a crazy amount of hours into it. From the immersive quest lines, expansive open world, and player-driven economy, to the freedom you have over your skills and combat styles, RuneScape is truly one of a kind. But sometimes you get that itch to see what else is out there. If you’re on the hunt for a game that captures some of that RuneScape magic, Albion Online, Brighter Shores, Eldevin, and Project Gorgon are all worth a try, but if you need more convincing or want other options, check out the list below.

Here are 15 games like RuneScape:

1.阿尔比恩在线

Albion Online, an MMO like RuneScape

Platforms: PC (Windows, Mac, Linux), Mobile (iOS and Android), and Xbox Series X|S
Price on Steam: Free
Steam Link: https://store.steampowered.com/app/761890/Albion_Online/

Albion Online is an MMO game like RuneScape; it’s free-to-play and is set in an open medieval fantasy world. This game shares many similarities with RuneScape while still holding its own in the MMORPG gaming sphere.

If you enjoyed the freedom of a classless skill system, Albion Online has what you’re looking for. On top of this, it shares RuneScape’s emphasis on gathering resources for crafting, player-owned houses, and risking everything to grab loot in the Red and Black Zones or the Wilderness. Even the controls feel similar, with both games having a top-down perspective and click-to-move mechanics.

Where Albion Online stands apart is in its cooperative play. While RuneScape prioritizes solo player experiences and PvE, Albion Online is made to be played in a group. It was built for guild wars, political alliances, and controlling territory, so if you like taking out your fellow players, this game is for you.

Unlike RuneScape, Albion Online has precious few quests; however, I think it makes up for it with its fast-paced combat that relies on cooldown management, active positioning, and skill shots.

2. Brighter Shores

Brighter Shores, from RuneScape creator Andrew Gower

Platforms: PC (Windows, macOS )
Price on Steam: Free
Steam Link: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2791440/Brighter_Shores/

Brighter Shores feels a lot like RuneScape and for good reason. Its maker, Andrew Gower, co-created and led the design of the original RuneScape, helping Brighter Shores capture many of RuneScape’s best elements, including its classic point-and-click interface and similar gameplay loop.

This fantasy MMORPG has a nostalgic art style that resembles the classic charm of early RuneScape that is popular with players. Fans of Brighter Shores enjoy the grind and the passive training system, which lets characters slowly level up while they’re logged off. However, negative reviews on Steam suggest that the grind isn’t for everyone.

The key differences between Brighter Shores and RuneScape are in its world and combat mechanics. While RuneScape is known for its large open world, the Brighter Shores map is divided into rooms. Although you can’t look out to the horizon and spot players or danger ahead, the benefit of these rooms is that they have a max capacity, so nowhere ever feels overcrowded, even vital resources or quest areas.

Brighter Shores was created to be a cozier, more casual RuneScape experience, and because of this, there is a clear difference in combat mechanics. While RuneScape has high-stakes resource management, Brighter Shores automatically heals you after each battle. Instead of tick-based auto-retaliation that forces players to think about positioning and weapon attack speeds, Brighter Shores has a lighter combat loop where you have to time character abilities and choose the most strategic weapon.

At the end of the day, it depends on your play style, but if you enjoyed the grind of RuneScape but wanted a more forgiving combat experience, Brighter Shores is a must-try.

3. Eldevin

Eldevin, a free MMORPG like RuneScape

Platforms: PC (Windows, macOS, Linux)
Price on Steam: Free
Steam Link: https://store.steampowered.com/app/298160/Eldevin/

Even though it has a much smaller audience, Eldevin is often compared to RuneScape because of its visual style and classless freedom. This award-winning indie MMORPG was made by Haunted Cow Studios and, like its popular counterpart, has a top-down perspective and retro graphics.

Both games allow you to mix and match abilities instead of forcing you into a traditional RPG class, letting players experiment and create their own unique build. Likewise, Eldevin has 14+ professions including Weaponsmithing, Farming, and Alchemy. These non-combat professions are similar to RuneScape’s skill system, with fun additional details like a Skinning skill, which you need to harvest resources from most animals (brutal, I know).

Starting as an MMORPG browser game like RuneScape, Eldevin is now primarily played on Steam and is free to play, so you have no excuse not to try it. It has mostly positive reviews and a niche and passionate community.

What sets Eldevin apart from RuneScape is its quest structure. This game has linear, story-driven quests that move through a large, interconnected world with over 160 areas to explore. Players also note the difference in combat controls. While RuneScape favors the classic tick-based, click-and-point combat mechanics, Eldevin focuses on hotkeys and real-time action controls. Both games feature PvP and PVE, but because Eldevin has a much smaller player base than RuneScape, it includes a Story Mode for dungeons so players can run them solo if they can’t find enough people to fill a group.

4. Project Gorgon

Project Gorgon, a skill-based MMO like RuneScape

Platforms: PC (Windows, macOS, Linux)
Price on Steam: £20.99
Steam Link: https://store.steampowered.com/app/342940/Project_Gorgon/

If we’re looking for games like RuneScape, Project Gorgon belongs on the list. This old-school MMORPG feels free. There’s no hand-holding and no quest markers on the map for every little objective. Like in RuneScape, people who play Project Gorgon are encouraged to read NPC dialogue and find clues that lead them through a quest. This emphasis on exploration and curiosity is a big part of what makes these games great.

With an expansive fantasy open world and a classless system, it’s no surprise RuneScape fans have found a kindred spirit in Project Gorgon. Both games have a plethora of skills to train, a player-driven economy, and interesting ways to craft and interact within the world.

But despite many similarities, Project Gorgon feels unique. Its 3D art style is stunning, as is the depth of the NPCs, each with distinct likes, dislikes, and an impressive Favor system that lets players build friendships with real benefits. Project Gorgon emphasizes consequences, with permanent character changes following decisions like becoming a cursed werewolf. A refreshing twist on the many more forgiving MMORPG’s.

Project Gorgon’s combat is an active/tab-targeting hybrid where characters can equip two active combat skills at once and are affected by systems like the Rage System, which adds an exciting threat/defense mechanic to the game.

If you haven’t already tried Project Gorgon, you’re missing out, and the many positive Steam reviews prove it.

5. EVE Online

EVE Online, a player-driven economy MMO like RuneScape

Platforms: PC (Windows, macOS)
Price on Steam: Free
Steam Link: https://store.steampowered.com/app/8500/EVE_Online/

EVE Online looks nothing like the fantasy world of RuneScape, but these two games have more in common than you think. Set 21,000 years into the future, EVE Online is a giant space sandbox MMORPG. It is run on one massive server, which has over 7000 star systems for players to explore.

Like RuneScape, there is a player-driven economy, no set classes, and optional linear storylines, leaving players to explore the world as they see fit. EVE’s Nullsec functions similarly to RuneScape’s Wilderness, with PvP resulting in full-loot risks.

Where EVE Online differs is in its skill progression, combat scale, and perspective. Unlike players in RuneScape, who level up through repetitive skill grinding, EVE Online has a passive real-time skill queue that continues leveling up when you shut down the game.

Of course, no sci-fi MMORPG would be complete without epic space combat, and EVE Online delivers this in massive interstellar battles involving thousands of players. To help navigate these battlefields, as well as general exploration, EVE Online uses an indirect camera approach, with an interface and tactical overview when you are piloting a spaceship. This sets the game apart from the more classic point-and-click controls used in RuneScape.

EVE Online feels like the epic science fiction version of RuneScape, and is well worth a try if you’re looking to mix up your genres.

6. Guild Wars 2

Guild Wars 2, an MMO like RuneScape

Platforms: PC (Windows, macOS, Linux) and browser-based cloud streaming and companion options
Price on Steam: Free
Steam Link: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1284210/Guild_Wars_2/

I would be surprised if you haven’t heard of Guild Wars 2; it is an MMO game like RuneScape and is widely popular with over 16 million players. Free to play, with fast-paced action combat, an active player base, and a huge, zone-based open world to explore at your own pace.

But what makes Guild Wars 2 like RuneScape? Both of these games push players to collect cool armor, rare cosmetics, and achievements instead of following a single storyline, making it easy to sink a wild amount of hours into these worlds. Like RuneScape, Guild Wars 2 is set in a fantasy land where you can set your own goals, customize your character, and directly influence the game’s economy. You’re not forced into a set class, and Guild Wars 2’s professions can be adapted to fit any role, with a big focus on gear stats, weapons, and traits.

Unlike RuneScape, Guild Wars doesn’t have quests and instead relies on location-based Dynamic Events, Meta Events, and World Bosses that have real consequences. Failing an event could result in the enemy taking over a nearby town, destroying buildings, and much more, making the world feel alive and ever-changing.

You can also see differences in combat styles between RuneScape and Guild Wars 2, where ability-bar, point-and-click combat is traded for action-focused combat that relies on positional tactics and real-time dodging.

Despite these differences, Guild Wars 2 is a solid addition to this list, and if you enjoyed RuneScape, you might want to try this one next.

7. Valheim

Valheim, a survival game like RuneScape

Platforms: PC (Windows, Linux, macOS), Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2.
Price on Steam: £23.49
Steam Link: https://store.steampowered.com/app/892970/Valheim/

Valheim is an open-world survival game inspired by Norse mythology. It features action-RPG combat and can be enjoyed solo or with up to 10 friends. While on the hunt for games like RuneScape, Valheim might not immediately jump to mind, but there are a number of similarities that earn it a spot in this list. For example, both games have expansive open worlds that players can explore at their leisure, with unique areas and dangers that you could stumble upon before you’re ready. Likewise, RuneScape and Valheim have surprisingly similar skill progression, with both requiring players to actively do something to level up, such as using a particular type of weapon.

The grind-and-reward gameplay loop is also a familiar concept in these games, with both dedicating a significant amount of time to gathering resources and crafting. This allows players to upgrade gear, weapons, and other items so they can survive in more challenging areas and defeat bosses.

There are, of course, some obvious differences. Valheim is not an MMORPG, nor does it have narrative-driven quests or NPCs. While RuneScape uses its first-person point-and-click mechanics, in Valheim characters are used with WASD in 3D, third-person action. Valheim’s world is procedurally generated, giving each player a completely unique map layout, and it focuses on base building in a way you don’t see in RuneScape. But, if your favorite thing about RuneScape is its exploration, grind, and crafting, Valheim is worth a shot.

8. Soulbound: Online

Soulbound: Online, a pixel-art MMO like RuneScape

Platforms: PC (Windows)
Price on Steam: £13.75
Steam Link: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4369490/Soulbound_Online/

Soulbound: Online is a roguelite MMORPG currently in paid Early Access on Steam. This game blends MMO elements with bullet-heaven dungeon runs in a cyberpunk-esque virtual world. RuneScape players will enjoy Soulbound: Online’s retro pixel-art style and top-down 2D aesthetic, and they’ll find similarities in the crafting, economy, and life skills.

Both Soulbound: Online and RuneScape have a large world where players can farm crops, fish, mine, and gather resources. Players can cook food into meals that increase stamina, restore HP, and give characters a combat buff, and craft materials into gear, decorations, and weapons.

Soulbound: Online differs from RuneScape in several ways, including its combat style. Soulbound: Online has no PvP and instead focuses on survivor-like bullet-heaven dungeon runs that have action combat and auto-attacks. Players tackle these dungeons in parties of up to 3, though some raid bosses like Spectra allow up to 8 players. When leaving a dungeon in Soulbound: Online, players lose the relics and abilities they accrued throughout the levels, keeping only the loot and materials they earned.

If you’re looking for RuneScape’s charm coupled with fast-paced roguelite dungeon runs, Soulbound: Online is the game for you.

9. Ravendawn

Ravendawn, a sandbox MMORPG like RuneScape

Platforms: PC (Windows) Mobile (Android)
Price: Free
Link: https://ravendawn.online/en/horizons-call

Made by Tavernlight Games, Ravendawn is a top-down 2D MMORPG. This game focuses on dynamic world-building, unique character designs, impressive open-world house construction, and deep customization.

RuneScape players enjoy this game for its open-world exploration, hidden quests, and environmental progression, which lets you earn a reputation and unlock rewards rather than locking you into a single plotline. This sandbox MMORPG experience is very similar to RuneScape, giving players plenty of freedom and rewarding curiosity.

Additionally, Ravendawn players can enjoy the grind of resource gathering, crafting, and leveling skills, something that RuneScape is well known for. You can even use those resources to build and customize your own house in the game, which personally, is a huge win!.

Some key differences between these games show up in the class system and combat mechanics. While RuneScape doesn’t limit how many skills you can train, Ravendawn has eight archetypes, of which you choose three to pursue. Additionally, Ravendawn uses WASD movement and tab-targeting action combat with an active hotbar, rather than RuneScape’s click-to-attack mechanics.

However, with the fun fantasy world, immersive gameplay, and expansive MMORPG opportunities, this game definitely captures some of that RuneScape magic.

10. Tibia

Tibia, a classic MMORPG like RuneScape

Platforms: PC (Windows, Linux, macOS)
Price: Free
Link: https://www.tibia.com/mmorpg/free-multiplayer-online-role-playing-game.php

Originally released in 1997, Tibia has been around for a while yet still has a dedicated player base, which says a lot about the game’s quality. Like many games on this list, Tibia resembles RuneScape with its top-down perspective and 2D pixel-art graphics.

Plenty of gamers will have heard of, if not played, Tibia before, and it gives many the same nostalgic feel as RuneScape. Tibia is free-to-play and has an open fantasy world, dungeons, quests, and limitless character levels/skill building. It’s the perfect go-to for players who love tile-based point-and-click mechanics.

One of the clearest differences between RuneScape and Tibia is their attitudes towards player deaths. Tibia is notoriously punishing, and dying causes you to drop items and lose a significant amount of experience and skill. Meanwhile, in RuneScape, anything you drop when you die can be retrieved unless you’re in a PvP area.

If you’re looking for an old-school gaming experience like RuneScape, you can’t do better than Tibia.

11. Villagers & Heroes

Villagers & Heroes, a casual MMO like RuneScape

Platforms: PC (Windows)
Price on Steam: Free
Steam Link: https://store.steampowered.com/app/263540/Villagers_and_Heroes/

Villagers & Heroes is what you should reach for after a long, tiring week. This cozy MMO adventure focuses on gathering and crafting in a vast fantasy realm. You can build a home and form a village within the game’s wholesome community where cooperative PvE is front and foremost.

Like RuneScape, Villagers & Heroes has mastered the crafting skill loop and treats non-combat skills, like fishing or woodcutting, as the game’s heart. Both of these MMOs have passionate, tight-knit communities with large free-to-play areas and optional monetization and membership features.

Where these games differ is in the combat and art style. Villagers & Heroes uses a bright, whimsical 3D aesthetic, while RuneScape is known for its nostalgic art. Villagers & Heroes also uses a 3D tab-targeting system with active and passive skill bars for specific classes, which feels different from RuneScape’s click-and-point combat.

Even so, if you enjoy the gathering, exploring, and crafting elements of RuneScape, Villagers & Heroes is the cozy next game for you.

12. EverQuest II

EverQuest II, a classic MMO like RuneScape

Platforms: PC (Windows)
Price on Steam: Free
Steam Link: https://store.steampowered.com/app/201230/EverQuest_II/

Released in 2004, EverQuest II is a deep fantasy game that became a staple during the golden years of MMORPGs. Now over 20 years old, this game has retained its loyal following thanks to diligent expansion releases, rich lore, and in-depth mechanics.

Because both games originated in the early 2000s, it’s not surprising that RuneScape and EverQuest II share common ground. Both are classic high-fantasy games with masses of quests and achievements for players to explore. These online role-playing games offer long-term progression for truly dedicated fans and appeal to those who love building skills, crafting gear, and taking on new professions.

However, while they are similar, EverQuest II forces players to choose a race and class combination at the start, which takes away some of the freedom found in RuneScape’s skill system. Also worth noting is that while RuneScape has voice acting in key areas, EverQuest is well known for its extensive, star-studded lineup, including Wil Wheaton, Heather Graham, Christopher Lee, and Dwight Schultz. However, thanks to its continued expansion, some areas of the game are now text-only.

With its mysterious atmosphere and old-school charm, EverQuest is a great game to play if you are craving an MMORPG like RuneScape.

13. Crimson Desert Enhanced

Crimson Desert, an open-world RPG like RuneScape

Platforms: PC (Windows and macOS), Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5
Price on Steam: £54.99
Steam Link: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3321460/Crimson_Desert_Enhanced/

Crimson Desert Enhanced is the newest addition to this list, having been released in 2026. This single-player, open-world high-fantasy game is truly beautiful and has already built a huge community, selling over 2 million copies in just 12 days.

This game captures that RuneScape feeling with its expansive open world, epic combat, fun side quests, and immersive medieval fantasy experience. Whether you want to ride a dragon, take on a job as a detective, or participate in an archery contest, Crimson Desert has it all. Like RuneScape, gear plays a big role in Crimson Desert; upgrading and choosing the right equipment for fights and challenges often means the difference between life and death.

While these games feel similar, they differ in several key ways. For example, in Crimson Desert, you upgrade skills and stats by spending Abyss Artifacts, which you earn by completing boss fights, progressing through the story, solving puzzles, defeating enemies, etc. On the other hand, in RuneScape, skills increase by regularly performing actions linked to the skill.

But the biggest difference between these games is that Crimson Desert is a single-player action RPG, while RuneScape is an MMORPG. Although MMOs heavily inspired this game, the developers chose to focus on making it a solo experience. So if you love RuneScape but would prefer to tackle the world alone, Crimson Desert is for you.

14. Black Desert Online

Black Desert Online, a life-skilling MMO like RuneScape

Platforms: PC (Windows and Linux)  Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Mobile
Price on Steam: £8.99
Steam Link: https://store.steampowered.com/app/582660/Black_Desert/

A staple amongst MMORPGs, Black Desert Online has earned its reputation. Developed by Pearl Abyss, this open-world sandbox has thrilled players with a fast-paced, fluid combat system and incredible character customization that is so detailed you can adjust every element of a character.

Like RuneScape, Black Desert Online offers free, endless progression with plenty of long-term incentives to keep you coming back. The fantasy worlds are huge, with unique areas and regions to explore. Life skills also feature heavily in both games, with non-combat skills like cooking forming a big part of the player experience.

What sets Black Desert Online apart from RuneScape is its AFK mechanics and popular combat system. This game lets characters perform tasks like processing materials while players are away from the screen, whereas RuneScape heavily discourages inactivity. Additionally, Black Desert Online is often praised for its action-based combat, which some say feels like a 3D fighting game rather than the more classic MMO combat. Attacks are dynamic and fluid, with hits that matter and enemies that react quickly.

If you’re a RuneScape fan who loves the open world but craves more active combat, I would seriously suggest you invest in Black Desert Online.

15. Wurm Online

Wurm Online, a sandbox MMO like RuneScape

Platforms: PC (PC, Mac, and Linux)
Price on Steam: Free
Steam Link: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1179680/Wurm_Online/

Wurm Online is unique with a small and dedicated player base. What makes this MMORPG so interesting is its persistent open-world sandbox. In this game, players can shape the terrain, build their own establishments, and leave a lasting mark on the world.

This MMO definitely captures the classic fantasy elements that players enjoy in RuneScape. Both games benefit from classless progression and a strong crafting loop, with a player-run economy where almost every item sold is made by the players.

However, Wurm Online is considered a survival simulation with hunger, thirst, and stamina to contend with, making it a slower pace than RuneScape. Every action takes time, and the bigger the project, the longer it will take to complete. Likewise, combat is more complex and slower-paced than in RuneScape, with unique directional controls where players must manage their stamina, choose a target zone, and use a directional dial to select attak/defense angles.

Wurm Online has a steep learning curve, but if you tackle it, you’ll find an MMORPG like RuneScape, tailored for hardcore, dedicated players who love a challenge.
